Salivary Steroid Profile

Meaning

A Salivary Steroid Profile is a comprehensive diagnostic assessment that measures the concentrations of multiple, unconjugated steroid hormones in a patient’s saliva over a specified period, often throughout a full day or menstrual cycle. This non-invasive test provides a quantitative snapshot of the biologically active, or “free,” fraction of hormones, such as cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, that are readily available to target tissues. Clinically, the profile is used to identify subtle hormonal imbalances, monitor the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy, and evaluate adrenal function, particularly the diurnal cortisol rhythm.
