Salivary Cortisol Rhythm

Meaning

Salivary Cortisol Rhythm refers to the characteristic and predictable diurnal pattern of cortisol secretion, measured via non-invasive saliva samples taken throughout a 24-hour period. Cortisol, a primary stress hormone, naturally peaks shortly after waking (the cortisol awakening response) and gradually declines to its lowest point late at night. Assessing this rhythm provides a dynamic and clinically relevant picture of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, offering superior insight compared to a single static blood measurement. Deviations from the normal rhythm are indicative of chronic stress, HPA axis dysregulation, and potential hormonal imbalance.
