Reward Pathway Sensitization

Meaning

Reward pathway sensitization is a neurobiological process where the neural circuits responsible for processing pleasure, motivation, and reinforcement—primarily involving the mesolimbic dopamine system—become more responsive to natural, healthy stimuli. This process is the opposite of desensitization, which occurs with chronic overstimulation from highly palatable foods or addictive behaviors. The clinical goal is to restore the natural pleasure response, thereby enhancing intrinsic motivation and improving adherence to wellness protocols.
