Reversible Binding

Meaning

Reversible binding is a fundamental principle in pharmacology and biochemistry describing the transient, non-covalent association of a molecule, such as a drug or a hormone, with its target receptor or enzyme. This type of binding is characterized by the formation of weak chemical bonds, including hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, and van der Waals forces, allowing the ligand to quickly associate and dissociate from the binding site. The duration and extent of the biological effect are directly proportional to the concentration of the ligand and its affinity for the target.
