Retrospective Cohort Study

Meaning

A Retrospective Cohort Study is an observational research design where investigators systematically look backward in time to examine a defined group of individuals, known as a cohort, who share a common characteristic or exposure, such as receiving a specific hormonal treatment. Researchers utilize existing data sources, like electronic medical records or large patient databases, to compare the historical incidence of a particular health outcome, such as a disease or adverse event, between the exposed group and a carefully selected non-exposed control group. This design is exceptionally valuable in endocrinology for pragmatically assessing long-term safety signals and real-world outcomes of hormonal interventions where a prospective trial is unfeasible.
