Retinopathy Screening

Meaning

Retinopathy screening is a specialized clinical procedure involving the systematic examination of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, to detect early signs of damage to the blood vessels, primarily caused by systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus or chronic hypertension. This ophthalmological assessment is crucial in hormonal health because prolonged endocrine dysregulation, particularly chronic hyperglycemia, leads to microvascular pathology in the retina, known as diabetic retinopathy. Early identification through screening allows for timely intervention, which is essential for preventing progressive vision loss and managing a major complication of metabolic endocrinopathy.
