Retinal Ganglion Cell Activation

Meaning

Retinal Ganglion Cell Activation is the electrophysiological response of specific neurons in the retina, known as Retinal Ganglion Cells (RGCs), following the absorption of light. Crucially, a subset of these RGCs contains the photopigment melanopsin and is intrinsically photosensitive (ipRGCs), meaning they activate independently of the classic rod and cone photoreceptors. This activation is the primary input signal that entrains the body’s central circadian rhythm.
