Retained Histones

Meaning

Retained Histones describes a phenomenon in male reproductive biology where a significant number of histone proteins, which normally compact DNA in somatic cells, fail to be fully replaced by protamines during the final stages of sperm maturation, or spermiogenesis. This incomplete chromatin remodeling results in sperm with a less compact, more vulnerable DNA structure, which can compromise the integrity of the paternal genome. In the context of hormonal health and fertility, the presence of retained histones is a clinical marker strongly associated with increased sperm DNA fragmentation, reduced male fertility potential, and poorer embryo development outcomes, underscoring the vital role of proper chromatin structure in reproductive longevity.
