Resting Metabolism

Meaning

Resting Metabolism, often quantified as the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), is the minimum amount of energy, measured in calories, required to maintain essential physiological functions at rest, such as breathing, circulation, organ function, and basic cellular activity. This measurement is taken under specific, non-stressful conditions, typically after a period of fasting and rest, but not deep sleep. RMR accounts for the largest component of an individual’s total daily energy expenditure and is a critical determinant of weight management and metabolic health. It provides a foundational benchmark for assessing an individual’s caloric needs and the efficiency of their thyroid function.
