Resting Metabolism

Meaning

Resting metabolism, often referred to as Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) or Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), quantifies the minimal energy required by the body to sustain fundamental physiological functions while at complete physical and mental rest, in a thermoneutral environment, and in a post-absorptive state. This foundational energy output supports vital processes such as respiration, circulation, cellular repair, hormone production, and maintaining core body temperature, constituting the largest component of an individual’s total daily energy expenditure.
