Resistance Training Adrenal Response

Meaning

This term describes the acute and chronic changes in the secretion of hormones from the adrenal glands that occur in response to engaging in resistance training, commonly known as weightlifting. The primary hormones involved are cortisol and the catecholamines, epinephrine and norepinephrine. The magnitude and pattern of this adrenal response are highly dependent on the intensity, volume, and duration of the exercise session. Clinicians monitor this response to assess training load and recovery status.
