Resilience to Stress

Meaning

Resilience to Stress is the physiological and psychological capacity of an individual to maintain or rapidly return to a state of optimal function and homeostasis following exposure to acute or chronic physical, emotional, or environmental stressors. Clinically, this is quantified by the stability and rapid recovery of key regulatory systems, particularly the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system. High resilience is a hallmark of youth and robust health.
