Reproductive Senescence

Meaning

Reproductive senescence is the biological process of age-related decline and eventual cessation of reproductive function in both males and females, characterized by the progressive depletion of gamete reserves and a significant decline in sex hormone production. In females, this manifests clinically and abruptly as menopause, while in males, it is a more gradual process known as andropause or age-related hypogonadism. It is a fundamental, non-reversible aspect of the human aging phenotype with profound systemic consequences.
