Reproductive Potential Cost

Meaning

The quantifiable reduction or temporary cessation of an individual’s capacity for natural procreation, which is a direct, predictable side effect of exogenous sex steroid administration that suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This cost is a critical clinical and ethical consideration, encompassing the loss of viable sperm production in males or disruption of the ovulatory cycle in females. Counseling must clearly delineate this consequence as part of the symptomatic improvement tradeoff inherent in hormonal therapy.
