Reproductive Plasticity

Meaning

Reproductive Plasticity is the biological capacity of the reproductive system, primarily governed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, to dynamically alter its function in response to significant metabolic, energetic, or environmental challenges. This is an adaptive mechanism, ensuring that the organism does not commit energy and resources to reproduction when survival is threatened or resources are scarce. It manifests as a reversible suppression of fertility, which is a key survival mechanism across species. Understanding this plasticity is vital in managing stress-induced hormonal imbalances.
