Reproductive Axis Sensitivity

Meaning

Reproductive axis sensitivity describes the responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal or HPG axis to its own regulatory hormones and external signals. This sensitivity is crucial for maintaining the precise pulsatile release of Gonadotropin-releasing hormone or GnRH, and the subsequent secretion of Luteinizing hormone or LH and Follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH, which govern reproductive function in both males and females. High sensitivity ensures appropriate feedback and adaptation to physiological demands, while reduced sensitivity can lead to conditions like functional hypothalamic amenorrhea or secondary hypogonadism.
