Reproductive Axis Quiescence

Meaning

Reproductive Axis Quiescence describes a physiological state of reduced or significantly suppressed activity in the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, resulting in a temporary or prolonged cessation of normal reproductive function. This state is naturally observed during prepubescence, periods of severe systemic illness, or under conditions of extreme energetic stress, such as intense athletic training or severe caloric restriction. Clinically, it manifests as amenorrhea in females or low testosterone in males, signaling a protective diversion of metabolic energy away from reproduction to prioritize immediate survival.
