Reproductive Axis Inhibition

Meaning

Reproductive Axis Inhibition refers to the suppression or functional shutdown of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, leading to decreased synthesis and secretion of sex hormones and subsequent impairment of fertility and reproductive function. This condition is often a secondary, adaptive response to severe physiological stressors, such as chronic energy deficit, excessive exercise, or persistent psychological stress, which the body prioritizes over reproduction. It is a critical marker of systemic energy and stress imbalance.
