Replacement Compounding

Meaning

Replacement compounding is the pharmaceutical practice of preparing customized, patient-specific hormone medications that are biologically and chemically identical to the hormones naturally produced by the human body. This process is undertaken by a licensed compounding pharmacist based on a physician’s prescription to address individual patient needs that cannot be met by commercially available, mass-produced dosage forms. In hormonal health, this allows for precise dose titration, combination of multiple hormones in one preparation, or the use of alternative delivery systems like transdermal creams or sublingual troches. It is a fundamental tool in personalized hormone replacement therapy.
