Renin-Angiotensin System

Meaning

The Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS), also known as the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS), is a complex endocrine cascade primarily responsible for the long-term regulation of systemic blood pressure, fluid volume, and electrolyte balance. This system involves a series of enzymatic conversions that ultimately produce the potent vasoconstrictor Angiotensin II and stimulate the release of the mineralocorticoid aldosterone. Dysregulation of the RAS is a central mechanism in the pathogenesis of hypertension, cardiac fibrosis, and chronic kidney disease.
