Renal Sodium Excretion

Meaning

Renal Sodium Excretion is the physiological process by which the kidneys regulate the amount of sodium ions eliminated from the body via the urine, a function critical for maintaining extracellular fluid volume, plasma osmolality, and systemic blood pressure. This highly regulated process is a key determinant of fluid balance and is tightly controlled by a complex interplay of hormonal signals, including aldosterone, natriuretic peptides, and angiotensin II. Clinical dysregulation of this mechanism can lead to conditions such as hypertension, edema, or hyponatremia.
