Renal Safety

Meaning

Renal safety refers to the clinical assessment and monitoring of the kidney’s function to ensure that a therapeutic intervention, such as a medication or supplement, does not cause damage or exacerbate pre-existing renal impairment. Maintaining renal integrity is paramount because the kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products, regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, and excreting many drugs and their metabolites. Clinical practice necessitates evaluating a drug’s nephrotoxic potential and adjusting dosages in patients with compromised kidney function to prevent drug accumulation and toxicity. Comprehensive lab testing of glomerular filtration rate and creatinine levels is routinely used to assess this safety profile.
