Renal Osteodystrophy

Meaning

Renal Osteodystrophy is a complex, chronic bone disease that manifests as a severe skeletal complication in patients suffering from advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). This pathology encompasses a spectrum of bone turnover abnormalities, including defective mineralization and the deposition of calcium in soft tissues, fundamentally representing an endocrine disorder. The condition arises from the kidney’s failure to maintain proper homeostatic control over the crucial minerals calcium and phosphate, as well as Vitamin D metabolism.
