Renal Hypertrophy

Meaning

Renal hypertrophy refers to the enlargement of the kidney or its individual nephrons, typically involving an increase in cell size rather than an increase in cell number. This adaptive response is characterized by augmented protein synthesis and accumulation of intracellular components within existing renal cells, particularly tubular epithelial cells and glomeruli. It serves as a compensatory mechanism, allowing the kidney to sustain its functional capacity under conditions of increased workload or following the loss of nephron mass.
