Renal Hypertrophy

Meaning

Renal Hypertrophy is the clinical condition characterized by an abnormal increase in the size of the kidney, resulting from an enlargement of the existing functional cells rather than an increase in cell number. This compensatory physiological change often occurs in response to increased metabolic demand or after the loss of functional nephrons, such as in unilateral nephrectomy or early diabetic nephropathy. The endocrine system is critically involved, as various growth factors and hormones directly stimulate renal cell growth.
