REM Sleep

Meaning

REM Sleep, or Rapid Eye Movement sleep, is a distinct stage of sleep characterized by high-frequency, low-amplitude brain waves, muscle atonia, and bursts of rapid eye movements. This stage is critically important for cognitive function, including memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and brain plasticity. Hormonal secretion, particularly the pulsatile release of Growth Hormone and the regulation of cortisol, is tightly linked to the cyclical patterns of REM and non-REM sleep.
