REM plasticity refers to the brain’s capacity to modify the structure, duration, and content of its Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep phase in response to prior wake-state experiences, learning demands, and physiological needs. This adaptability is critical for processes like emotional regulation, procedural memory consolidation, and cortical circuit refinement. High REM plasticity indicates a healthy, responsive nervous system capable of integrating new information and adapting to psychological stress. Impaired plasticity may hinder the brain’s restorative and learning functions.
