REM Density Scoring

Meaning

REM Density Scoring is a quantitative polysomnographic measure that calculates the frequency of rapid eye movements (REMs) per unit of time during the Rapid Eye Movement sleep stage. This metric is a subtle but informative index of central nervous system activation during the dreaming phase of sleep, reflecting the intensity of pontine-geniculo-occipital (PGO) wave activity. Alterations in REM density are being explored as a potential objective biomarker for various neurological and psychiatric conditions, including depression and Parkinson’s disease. The score offers a deeper level of insight into sleep architecture beyond simple stage duration.
