REM Cycle Testosterone Linkage

Meaning

REM Cycle Testosterone Linkage describes the observed and biologically significant correlation between the duration and quality of the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep stage and the pulsatile secretion of testosterone, predominantly in males. Adequate, uninterrupted REM sleep is hypothesized to be a necessary neuroendocrine condition for the optimal nocturnal release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which subsequently stimulates testicular testosterone production. Clinically, chronically disrupted REM sleep can therefore negatively impact overall androgen status and anabolic drive.
