Regulatory Lag

Meaning

This term describes the temporal delay that exists between a change in a physiological signal, such as a shift in hormone concentration or a metabolic demand, and the full, corresponding corrective response by the body’s homeostatic or regulatory systems. Regulatory lag is a measure of the system’s inertia and responsiveness, and a prolonged lag can lead to sustained periods of sub-optimal function or pathology. Recognizing this lag is critical in interpreting dynamic endocrine testing and predicting the time course of therapeutic interventions.
