Red Blood Cells

Meaning

Red Blood Cells (RBCs), or erythrocytes, are the most abundant type of blood cell, fundamentally responsible for the efficient transport of oxygen from the lungs to all body tissues and the carriage of carbon dioxide back for exhalation. These biconcave, anucleated cells contain the iron-rich protein hemoglobin, which reversibly binds to oxygen, facilitating this essential gas exchange. The production and maintenance of a healthy red blood cell count are directly influenced by hormones like erythropoietin and androgens, linking them directly to hormonal health and overall vitality.
