Recovery and Adaptation

Meaning

Recovery and Adaptation describes the essential, sequential physiological processes that follow any significant physical or mental stressor, leading to an enhanced capacity to handle future challenges. Recovery is the acute restoration of homeostasis, including substrate replenishment and inflammation resolution, while adaptation is the chronic, beneficial structural or functional change, such as muscle hypertrophy or increased stress tolerance. Optimal hormonal signaling, particularly the balance between cortisol and anabolic hormones, is the central determinant of this process.
