Receptor Site Sensitization

Meaning

The clinical goal of increasing the responsiveness of target cells to their corresponding signaling molecules, such as insulin, thyroid hormone, or sex steroids, by improving receptor density or post-binding transduction efficiency. Sensitization effectively lowers the threshold required for a biological response, making existing endogenous hormone levels more functionally effective. This is often necessary when hormone levels are adequate but cellular response is blunted.
