Receptor Site Saturation

Meaning

Receptor Site Saturation is the state where the concentration of a specific hormone or signaling ligand is high enough to occupy virtually all available, functional receptor sites on target cells. While necessary for maximal signaling effect, chronic saturation can lead to receptor desensitization or downregulation over time. Clinically, we distinguish between acute saturation needed for function and chronic saturation leading to functional impairment. Understanding this threshold is vital for dosage management.
