Receptor Site Insensitivity

Meaning

A state of diminished cellular responsiveness where a target cell’s receptors fail to adequately transduce the signal of a circulating hormone, despite the hormone being present at normal or even elevated concentrations. This functional impairment, often termed resistance, means the physiological effect of the hormone is blunted, leading to a state of pseudo-deficiency at the cellular level. It is a critical concept in metabolic and endocrine disorders.
