Receptor Site Density

Meaning

Receptor Site Density refers to the total number of specific protein receptors expressed per unit area on the surface or within the cytoplasm and nucleus of target cells available to bind a particular hormone or signaling molecule. This density is a primary determinant of a cell’s sensitivity to endocrine stimulation, often acting as a fine-tuning mechanism independent of circulating hormone levels. Low density implies resistance, while high density suggests heightened responsiveness to the ligand.
