Receptor Sensitivity

Meaning

Receptor sensitivity refers to the degree of responsiveness a cellular receptor exhibits towards its specific ligand, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter. This responsiveness dictates how effectively a cell can detect and react to signaling molecules present in its environment, influencing the magnitude of the downstream cellular response. A highly sensitive receptor elicits a significant effect even with low concentrations of its ligand, whereas reduced sensitivity necessitates higher ligand concentrations to achieve a comparable cellular action.
