Receptor Sensitivity Modulation

Meaning

Receptor Sensitivity Modulation refers to the clinical ability to adjust the affinity or density of hormone receptors on target cells, thereby altering the magnitude of the cellular response to a given concentration of circulating ligand. This is crucial when hormone levels are adequate but the physiological effect is diminished, indicating resistance or desensitization. Effective modulation restores the intended downstream signaling, improving tissue responsiveness to endogenous or exogenous hormones. It addresses the ‘output’ side of the endocrine equation.
