Receptor Responsivity

Meaning

Receptor responsivity denotes the inherent capacity of a target cell’s specific receptors to bind to a circulating hormone or signaling molecule and subsequently initiate an appropriate and robust intracellular biological response. This metric is a crucial determinant of hormonal efficacy, often more important than the absolute concentration of the hormone itself. Diminished responsivity, clinically termed resistance, is a hallmark of many prevalent endocrine pathologies, such as insulin resistance or tissue-level thyroid hormone resistance.
