Receptor Polymorphism

Meaning

Receptor Polymorphism refers to the existence of one or more common variations in the DNA sequence of a gene that codes for a specific cellular receptor protein. These genetic variations, often single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), can result in subtle but significant changes to the receptor’s structure, leading to altered binding affinity for its corresponding hormone or neurotransmitter, or modified downstream signaling efficiency. Clinically, these polymorphisms explain individual variability in response to hormonal therapies and susceptibility to endocrine disorders.
