Receptor Ligands

Meaning

Any molecule, including hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, or environmental compounds, that binds specifically and non-covalently to a receptor protein on the surface or inside a cell, thereby initiating a biological response. These ligands are the key messengers in the endocrine system, acting like a key fitting into a specific lock to deliver a physiological instruction. Their precise interaction governs the entire cascade of cellular communication and hormonal action.
