Receptor Function

Meaning

Receptor Function describes the biological capacity of specialized protein molecules, located either on the cell surface or within the cell nucleus, to recognize, bind to, and transduce the signal of a specific ligand, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter. Optimal receptor function is paramount for hormonal health, as it determines the magnitude and specificity of the cellular response to a circulating endocrine signal. Dysfunction, such as reduced sensitivity or receptor downregulation, can lead to clinical conditions like insulin resistance or androgen insensitivity.
