Receptor Distribution

Meaning

Receptor distribution refers to the specific spatial pattern and density of hormone receptor proteins across various tissues, organs, and cellular compartments within the human body. The precise location and quantity of these receptors fundamentally determine which specific cells are responsive to a particular circulating hormone and the ultimate magnitude of the resulting biological effect. Clinically, an altered distribution pattern can readily explain instances of tissue-specific hormone resistance or, conversely, an exaggerated systemic response.
