Receptor Binding Competition

Meaning

Receptor Binding Competition is a molecular endocrinology concept where two or more structurally similar ligands, whether endogenous hormones or exogenous therapeutic compounds, simultaneously attempt to occupy the same limited number of cellular receptor sites. The outcome is determined by the relative concentrations of the ligands and their respective binding affinities for the receptor. This competition is a crucial determinant of net hormonal action at the tissue level, as the presence of a weak agonist or a potent antagonist can dramatically alter the cell’s response to the primary hormone. Clinically, this mechanism explains why seemingly adequate hormone levels may fail to produce a desired effect.
