Receptor Agonist Antagonism

Meaning

Receptor Agonist Antagonism describes the dual capacity of a substance, typically a hormone or an exogenous chemical, to either activate (agonist) or block (antagonist) the biological activity of a specific cellular receptor. In hormonal health, this term is frequently used to explain how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) mimic or inhibit the action of endogenous hormones like estrogen or thyroid hormone. This complex interaction directly disrupts normal chemical signalling and systemic biochemical regulation.
