Reactive Oxygen Species

Meaning

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen, such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals, which are generated as natural byproducts of cellular metabolism. While a certain level of ROS is necessary for cellular signaling and immune function, an excessive accumulation leads to oxidative stress, a state of imbalance between ROS production and the body’s antioxidant defenses. Uncontrolled oxidative stress damages cellular components, including DNA, proteins, and lipids, accelerating the aging process and contributing to numerous chronic diseases. Maintaining a precise redox balance is crucial for cellular and hormonal health.
