Re-Sensitization

Meaning

Re-Sensitization is a therapeutic strategy designed to restore the normal responsiveness of cellular receptors that have become downregulated or desensitized due to prolonged, high-level exposure to a hormone or pharmacological agent. This physiological process is crucial in hormonal health, especially when dealing with conditions like insulin resistance or prolonged use of exogenous hormones, where the target tissue no longer responds effectively to the signal. The goal is to enhance receptor density or affinity, thereby allowing a lower, more physiological concentration of the ligand to elicit the desired biological effect.
