RBC Magnesium

Meaning

RBC Magnesium refers to the measurement of magnesium concentration within the red blood cells (erythrocytes), offering a superior clinical assessment of the body’s total magnesium status compared to the more common serum magnesium test. Since only about one percent of the body’s total magnesium is found in the serum, the RBC level provides a more accurate reflection of the functionally available, intracellular magnesium stores, which are vital for over 300 enzymatic reactions. This test is a critical indicator of long-term magnesium sufficiency.
