RANKL

Meaning

RANKL, or Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor Kappa-B Ligand, is a crucial protein belonging to the TNF superfamily that functions as the primary molecular signal for the formation, activation, and survival of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone resorption. RANKL is essential for the continuous process of bone remodeling and is a key link between the immune system and skeletal health. In the context of hormonal bone health, the balance between RANKL and its decoy receptor, OPG, is tightly regulated by estrogen.
