Radical Prostatectomy

Meaning

Radical Prostatectomy is a major surgical procedure involving the complete removal of the prostate gland and often the seminal vesicles, performed primarily as a curative treatment for localized prostate cancer. This intervention aims to eradicate the cancerous tissue but carries risks of affecting adjacent structures, notably the nerves controlling erectile function and the sphincter controlling urinary continence. Following the procedure, men often experience a significant, acute drop in circulating testosterone and may require post-operative hormonal or erectile function management. The long-term success of the surgery is measured by cancer recurrence rates and the preservation of quality of life.
