RAAS Polymorphism

Meaning

RAAS Polymorphism refers to the existence of common variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), within the genes that encode the various components of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS). This cascade is a critical endocrine system that regulates blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte homeostasis. These genetic variations can alter the function or expression level of key RAAS proteins, such as Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) or the Angiotensin II Receptor, thereby influencing an individual’s basal hormone levels and their susceptibility to conditions like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and certain forms of primary aldosteronism.
